Our English Speaking Doctors come to Matera
MedinAction’s English speaking doctors are now arriving in Matera, Italy! Located in the region of Basilicata, in Southern Italy, this city is home to “Sassi” which contains ancient cave dwellings. Lying in a small canyon, carved out by the Gravina River, Matera was named one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2019, and it is easy to see why!
The historical center account for many of the popular tourists sites, but the music, cuisine, and religious traditions in this beautiful city cannot be missed when traveling in Matera. Gaining international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi di Matera,” this prehistoric settlement and dwellings, are suspected to be the first ever settlements of humans in Italy. The ancient town was dug into and up one slope of a rocky ravine, making the dwellings today quite dangerous and uninhabitable. While once considered an area of extreme poverty, the Sassi is now a picture perfect tourist attraction. With the help of the Italian government, UNESCO, and Hollywood, this has become the fastest growing city in southern Italy.
The culture of Matera is also a major reason to visit. In fact, the culture in this city is so admired by the rest of the world, in 2014, Matera was named one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2019. Because of the ancient primeval-looking scenery in and around the Sassi, it has been used by filmmakers as the setting for ancient Jerusalem, featuring in major productions such as The Young Messiah (2016), Ben-Hur (2016), and Mary Magdalene (2018), in recent years. In addition to Matera’s noticeable credit in several productions, the culture is abound in the many festivals and traditions that occur in the city. Many of these festivals and traditions are surrounding the cuisine and special dishes, such as crapiata, that can trace its origin back to ancient Matera!
